Calatheas Insignis or Goeppertia insignis (syn. Calathea lancifolia, Goeppertia lancifolia) and commonly know as the Calathea Rattlesnake is a native of Brazil. It is an extremely popular houseplant collected for its marvellously spotted foliage. I’m not sure why it’s called Rattlesnake plant – it doesn’t look a thing like a rattlesnake, and being a tropical plant it doesn’t live in rattlesnake territory. How odd.

It is perfectly content in a lower light area of your home. Like all plants in the Marantaceae family, it will curl up its leaves if exposed to too much light. Because it doesn’t need a lot of light, it doesn’t need a lot of water. Water this plant when the leaves start to look limp.

Each living plant is unique and may vary slightly in size, colour or shape.
